Q1.In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products? By Jamaila Yazdani
During our research we knew that crime films involve conventional representation of characters such as the quintessential representation of the criminal who is the main character and the victim being oppressed by the criminal. Our media product adapts various media forms and conventions used in real media products like the use of violence, dark colors, discreet and steady camera work and low-key lighting. In that matter these re-enforcement's are stereotypical of of the genre of the film. All this is referred to the mis-en-scene of the film that works towards developing the outcome and impact of the film. We researched and analysed various films like The Usual Suspects, The Purge, Memento and Taken. The following films were chosen due to the criminal centric narratives and how the story is based around the criminal's failure or success. The criminals in these films are powerful and carry a menacing stature so we wanted to use this idea of an intimidating criminal and adopt it in our film as we wanted to evoke strong and mysterious moods that are used in crime films.
Camerawork and editing:
The way in which we did this was quite similar to the opening of The Usual Suspects wherein the criminal walks up to a man and shoots him and throughout the scene we don't see the criminal's face. Similarly our media film shows the criminal walking up to the victim and the camera slowly pans around him without revealing his face and the scene ends with a gun shot. The purpose of using this form was to depict a similar impact that The Usual Suspects creates on its audience by raising questions and leaving them under the mystery of whether the man actually got shot or as to why we don't see the criminal's face. In relation to The Usual Suspects we wanted the mystery of the criminal to exist from the start to allow the story, characters and world they inhabit to be firmly established before this intriguing figure was introduced which only elevates the tension and suspense further.
Another camerawork form that was closely embraced was from Memento which were the cut-in shots used in the opening. Cut-in shots are used to show the primary subject of the action and lure the audience in as closely as possible during the action. In Memento cut-in shots are used to enhance the mood and shed light on the action that has taken place. Comparably our film uses cut-in shots in the beginning during the credits to give the audience an idea on what has or is about to happen. With the maneuvering of the camera and having the credits roll over the cut-in shots, we wanted the audience to be a part of the action and view the shots from their own perspective.
From my research on previous films I noticed that the editing was generally fast with the occasional lingering shots of the main characters like in The Usual Suspects and Memento and Taken. However we used various transitions for the cut-in shots to sustain the effect of slow camera movement but at the same time develop the main character's image for the audience to recognize. Our first transition is used in the beginning where the shot cuts from the pan shot of the gun to the main character buttoning his cuff. Here we wanted to link our opening with the conventional crime film where the criminal's past or his motives are sometimes revealed.
Costumes and props:
One crucial way in which we developed forms and conventions of real media products was the costumes used in crime films. The colors are dark and edgy to create an intimidating atmosphere for the audience and the secondary characters. In this aspect we didn't challenge any form as we followed the homogeneous convention of using the color black or in that matter dark colors to sync with the elements of crime films. In the opening for The usual suspects the two characters are seen wearing black but the effect emerges in two varied ways. Where the man sitting down can be seen in black he does bring forth a darkness to his character we know that he is of lower status as he is about to be shot and the man who is standing, also wearing black, has more power generating an intimidating and shadowy aura. Likewise our film shows two characters face to face, both wearing dark colors but the audience can clearly see who has more power as the camera is positioned in such a way where the authority of the criminal is evident. The dark colors in our film are used to fabricate the situation that the characters are in.
Keeping in mind the primary props that are used in conventional crime films, we used similar props, the main one being the gun. Crime films are based on criminals so the props must link to their lifestyle. Heavy weaponry and violent antics are used by criminals to achieve their motives and ensure that everything is under their control and so we also decided to use a gun to signify the criminal's control and power he has over people. This is why we also wanted to end the scene at the gun shot leaving the audience under the impression that this character is dangerous.
Q2.How does your media product represent particular social groups? By Jamaila Yazdani
Characters in films are often represented in an either stereotypical, socially desirable or atypical manner. Our film opening consists of four primary characters that are stereotypical and unconventional to the genre. The main character who plays the criminal in our film is considerably the most conventional character as he is your typical villain in the story who will get rid of anything and anyone that threatens his métier. Much like crime films the criminals or central characters as to say have a certain style of dressing and demeanour that gives them that power and status that reflects through the screen for the audience to discern. The criminal in our film dresses in a very stylistic manner in a suit consisting of dark and sombre colors that gives off a mysterious vibe and his rugged exterior of an unshaven look reflects his stout attitude. As he was a male character we wanted him to be dominating and display a daunting image that male leads usually have in crime/thriller films. In this sense our main character represents the dominating male that likes to show his power and especially males in crime films who have an overpowering attitude towards the characters around them which reflects through to the audience as well.
The other male character in our film is of the victim who plays an undercover police officer who is working with the criminal in order to arrest him. In the first half of the film this character has an arguably powerful status where he can be seen ordering someone over the phone. His voice is loud and heavy which allows him to represent strong and powerful males and especially because he is a police officer he has to evoke an intimidating persona. However in the second half of the film the second lead character's status is diminished due to the criminal's presence. In crime films when the criminal and victim or rather when two males come face to face, one appears to have more power than the other and the tension between the two characters is evident. Similarly in our film the criminal male character is shown to have more power and status than the victim and this is because the friction between two male leads helps to bring forth the dominating aspect that males withdraw.
In contrast to the stereotypical portrayal of males in our film, we executed females in a more atypical manner where in most films females are shown to be weak and vulnerable and depending heavily on the male to protect them. With the more unconventional representation of females nowadays, we wanted our film to reflect a similar attitude with females being more powerful than the male and their capability to protect themselves. In our film the two females work for the criminal but are their own self. They have their sets of motives and goals that will help drive the narrative forward and perhaps prove them to be more dominating than the male. We see the dark and domineering personalities of the females with the two shot of the characters from the back wherein we don't see their faces. This gives them a tough and cynical look where the black colour enhances this look further. Another example is when the two female character's push the victim against a wall and shout and threaten him to ensure that he is aware of their position. The films that we did research on showed no female dominance or power from any aspect as it was only males who had the power much like in The Usual Suspects, Taken and Memento where all the introduction shots are of central male characters. Our film was diverse in that discrete aspect where the female was given as much importance and power as the male characters.
Q 3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why ? By Sanjay Kumar
As a group we thought that the kind of media institution that might distribute our media product are Warner bros and Legendary Pictures. The reason for this is because wanner bros and legendary pictures are in collaboration with each other and communally produce and distribute crime action thriller films. Some successful films from these two institutions together are Christian Nolan's The Dark knight trilogy. One reason why these institutions might distribute our media product is because as a group we believe that if me and my group were to have a chance to pitch our idea about and if we were to get funded properly we believe that our our filmwould be amoung the likes of Inception.
We also decided to use the indents that were used in the film The Dark Knight. The reason for choosing the indents from The Dark Knight was because , we thought that these indents best fit the genre of the film because it was really dark and liked the blue effect because we thought that the audience would know what sort of genre the film would be just by seeing how the indents have been represented to them.
Also during our research we looked at other production companies such as Paramount Pictures,we search this production company because they are well know for distributing massive blockbuster films such as The Godfather and the Italian Job.Also they are apart of the 'big five' and this has made them one of the most top grossing production companies in hollywood today.
Q 4.Who would be the audience for your media product ? By Sanjay Kumar
I think the audience for my media product would be teenagers aged 16 and over this is because as a group we came up with a survey to ask people if they like crime thrillers films , whats their favourite crime thriller is , what they like to see in crime thrillers and if they like to see women as a main character,we also asked them what certificate it should be. We surveyed 10 students outside of our class because if we ask people in our media class they all may give similar answers. We asked 5 girls and 5 boys, who were all aged16 or over. This helped because boys and girls may have different opinions and its useful to know overall what both sexes want.As a result of this we found out that the boys preferred to watch more crime thriller films than the girls did, this meant we now knew who our primary audience would be.
From our survey we also found out that a majority of the people we asked enjoyed to see a kidnapping take place during the film which suggested that they enjoyed the fast paced factor of thrillers and also a high "thrill" factor. These results gave us the motivation to base our opening around this aspect .
Another thing that we collected from our survey and added in to our opening was that the audience we surveyed mostly preferred watching the movie 'The Purge' more than the other thriller films that were placed there in the survey, because we had all seen 'The Purge' before we knew that because 'The Purge' was a popular film in our survey and as result may have meant that the audience preferred a villain who was more of a psycho.
Overall i thought that the target audience for our film would be teens aged 15 or more who are really in to the crime thriller genre, also who are fans of the dark knight trilogy. However we made sure that there wasn't a any bad language, blood and gore in our film becuase we know people who are younger then the age limit will still try and watch the film.
Q5:How did you attract/address your audience? By Sarabjot Nanra
We wanted the audience for our film opening to be mainly teenagers and young adults. To be specific 16 year olds and above. Our film opening is a crime thriller so it is not going to be too fast paced or not too slow. It had to be in the middle to build up the right amount of suspense leading into the film. Each and every shot had a mysterious feel about it which was slow enough but also fast enough leading into the last scene which we wanted to build up going into our main film, this is how we felt we could attract our audience by leaving them something to think about at the end. We wanted all of the scenes to attract our audience in such a way that they would actually feel like they would want to carry on and finish the film. We wanted the audience to straight away be attracted and drawn into the film to such a point where they would even start asking themselves questions about what would happen next. The background music right from the beginning to the very end would keep the audience drawn in throughout the whole film opening. The music we used was very suspenseful, it sounded like it was building up to something, and as the tempo of the music was increasing it would create such an effect where they would want to watch it right to the end, this would therefore attract the audience by them starting to really get into it.
A specific target audience is a group of people which a certain product is aimed at. For films a target audience is key in defining what type of film should be produced and who it should be aimed towards. We decided to do a survey which would help us prove our results which would determine what our target audience wanted, the survey was made to find out what viewers enjoy within the Crime-Thriller genre. This way we were able to discover what sort of audience and age group we should be aiming at and how our audience felt about this particular genre.
In the survey we asked 10 random people so our results would be random and not biased towards our specific audience. The questions were based on the results we would need to help us on improving our film opening. The 5 questions we asked were based around people's favourite crime thriller films, what they enjoy in crime thrillers, do they think women should feature in those type of movies and finally what certificate would you say it should be, most of the results were positive, and helped us to ensure that we could attract our audience in a way that would ensure it is what they wanted.
Q6:What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? By Abina Sandhu
During the process of making our opening film we learnt how to use different technologies effectively. Firstly we used our own camera because they're much better quality than the school ones, we needed the film to be high quality and that everything is clear because it would make out film look better and more realistic. One of the features on the camera is that it had a movie section which made the filming a lot more steady and when zooming in and out, it would be much smoother, this was helpful for us because we used the zooming in and out tool, so having it much smoother made the film look more realistic and higher quality. For example when were zooming it to one of the pictures on the wall, its very smooth and looked professional.
During our editing we used Final Cut Pro, this was very important during our editing process because it helped our editing look more professional, it helped us with transitions and special effects that we used during our opening film, for example putting the director names on our film and doing voiceovers. We also used lots of different music in our film and realised that it plays a big part in a film opening to create tension, for example he music when the picture is getting crossed out is more tense because we use fast pace music. We was also able to slow down some of our shots to fit the scene, for example when its the shot of the 2 ladies shoes, we used the retime tool to create more of an effect and create more tension. Overall we developed a lot of camera skills and using final cut pro became very simple during our editing process.
Q7:Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? By Abina Sandhu
Looking at the preliminary task we made and the way we have edited it compared to our full product is that there is a clear difference and our full product shows that we have developed our skills massively over the 6 weeks. An example to show that our skills have improved is that there were jump cuts in our prelim and this shows that we found it very difficult but our full product shows that we have developed the skills and made our cuts and transitions a lot smoother so it looks more realistic, for example when the policemen is walking and we do a quick cut to the over the shoulder shot, there is no jumps and its in time. Another thing that has improved greatly is our mise en scene, this involves the costume, in our prelim we didn't wear anything different but in our final product we improved this and tried finding the right costume to wear to fit with our genre. With our costumes being really fitting for the genre, this made our opening film look realistic and believable to the audience. For example, the two ladies were wearing leather jackets, black and they looked very serious, this made the film look very professional. Also the killer is in a suit and they look very smart which again made our film look real. Also in our full product we used props which made our opening look very professional with the gun and the black bag. Our surroundings and location looked a lot more realistic in comparison to our prelim because we didn't have time to find a place for our prelim but in our opening we looked for the perfect place to film which was the subway, a car park and an office. Our prelim also helped us during the process of making our full product, because we learnt basic skills about the camera, final cut and the 180 degrees rule. Overall our prelim gave us a feel of how making our opening film would be like and while making the full product we were able to develop these skills.
